How the Time Format Converter works

  1. Enter the time you want to convert.
  2. Select the conversion direction if it isn't detected automatically.
  3. Read both the 12-hour and 24-hour equivalents in the result.

Formula / logic

24-hour to 12-hour: subtract 12 from any hour after 12 and label it PM (00:00 becomes 12:00 AM). 12-hour to 24-hour: add 12 to any PM hour except 12 PM.

Worked example

14:00 in 24-hour time is 2:00 PM. Conversely, 9:00 PM becomes 21:00 in 24-hour (military) time.

Frequently asked questions

Which format do I need for international forms?

Most international and technical forms expect 24-hour format (e.g. 14:30 instead of 2:30 PM).

Why is midnight written as 00:00?

24-hour time starts each day at 00:00 rather than 12:00, avoiding the AM/PM ambiguity around midnight and noon.

Is military time the same everywhere?

The 24-hour clock format is the same worldwide, though it's more commonly used outside the US for everyday civilian purposes.
