Formula / logic
Time (seconds) = (File size in bytes × 8) ÷ Connection speed in bits per second.
Worked example
A 5 GB file on a 100 Mbps connection: 5,000,000,000 bytes × 8 = 40,000,000,000 bits ÷ 100,000,000 bps = 400 seconds (about 6 minutes 40 seconds).
Frequently asked questions
Does this use decimal (1000) or binary (1024) units?
This calculator uses decimal units (1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes), matching how ISPs advertise connection speeds in Mbps — the same convention most online speed tests use.
Why does my actual download take longer than the estimate?
Real-world downloads are affected by network overhead, server-side speed limits, Wi-Fi signal, and other devices sharing your connection, so actual times often run a bit longer than the theoretical estimate.
What internet speed do I need for a quick download?
Higher Mbps means less wait: a 5 GB file takes about 7 minutes at 100 Mbps but around 66 minutes at 10 Mbps.
Why divide by 8 in the formula?
File sizes are measured in bytes, but connection speeds are measured in bits per second, and there are 8 bits in a byte — the calculator converts between the two automatically.
Does Wi-Fi slow this down compared to a wired connection?
It can — Wi-Fi signal strength, interference, and router capability can all reduce real-world speed below your plan's advertised maximum.
